"God is good, all the time; all the time, God is good."

Believing this truth is the key to maintaining hope when our stories don't progress as we've planned. However, it's not enough to believe this truth in our minds. Instead, this truth must permeate our lives.

Writing these blog posts in recent weeks has increased my ability to trust God in a variety of situations. More than ever, I'm realizing:

  • The power of relinquishment. We need to hold our struggles with an open hand, let go, and realize that there simply isn't much that we can control.
  • The power of sharing. We need to share our struggles with others so that they can support us with encouragement and prayer.
  • The power of trust. We need to fully trust God, since trust in God can't be a "sometimes" or a "partial" thing.
  • The power of community. We need to walk with others who are struggling and yet still fighting to trust God.

While these realizations are growing, the biggest growth for me in these recent weeks has come from the Holy Spirit showing me in a variety of ways that God truly is good. This is where hope begins. Intellectually, I can believe this truth, yet I still might struggle with this truth in practical, daily ways. Hope requires trust, but trust requires an unshakable belief that God is good all the time, not just sometimes.

During this season, I have been encouraged through worship, especially by two songs. The following chorus from the song "Blessings"by Laura Story speaks to God's goodness:

'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops?
What if Your healing comes through tears?
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You're near?
What if trials of this life
Are Your mercies in disguise?

And the song "Who Can Compare" by Mary Kat Ehrenzeller is a powerful declaration of trust:

You take my hand
You guide me on
You show me the way to life
You lift my head
You give me hope
You show me the way to life

As you face tough situations in your life, situations that might cause you to doubt God's goodness, I pray that this verse would be an anchor for you, as it has been for me for many years: "May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13).
